    tcda, why even bother?
Blackmail has some sort of beef with Islam, it's nothing new.
The best way to deal with him is not talking to him, since what he does isn't bannable, just really annoying.

Blackmail is just following the crowd in France.

France moves toward partial burqa ban - CNN.com
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

More to the point, when is it going up again? I think we both would agree that a sustained consumption boom in the US is not likely to be on the cards any time soon.

You should read the eocnomist Robert Brenner (pdf warning) by the way, he can explain this much more eloquently than me.
"Of course we spent our money in the good times. That's what you're supposed to do in good times! You can't save money in the good times. Then they wouldn't be good times, they'd be 'preparation for the bad times' times."

    @YLJ - ?

Blackmail! does not appear to have any beef against Islam, per se. As he has stated, his distain is not aimed weary, circular religious debates, but at the quality of an argument.

If you can't grasp that, YLJ, you should butt out with your recommendations to ignore certain members.
Do continue, Blackers! A pleasure, as always.

Wow, atleast you guys get an A for derailing a good thread. Otherwise all of these arguments you guys are having is similar to telling a brick wall to move. You can scream and shout at it all day long but alas all efforts will be in vain and in the end the you will be the fool.

    Regarding some typology:

What are the major differences between Liberal conservatism and Conservative liberalism? I'm reading more about them, but it's kind of hazy.

it's because some people can't resist a bait; like a hungry fish.

I would consider it to be a matter of degree in practice, in fact in practice I suspect the policies would be the exact same anyway, in theory conservatism could mean cautious, so you have a "cautious liberalism" or gradual or reforming or moderate.

If you follow Robert Nisbet (and I reckon he's the best and clearest there is) conservatives are opposed to both individualism and statism.

Liberalism may or may not be opposed to statism, or may or may not judge all statism alike would be a better way of putting it, but there is a consensus that individualism is a good thing, always, or an objective reality anyway.

I think its curious that the two can be put together at all, although I think its a result of US history and politics where conservatives or traditionalists recall a liberal "original" or "golden age" which they think has given way to the status quo of welfare states. Largely I just think its the latest ideological construct to best serve politicians and their 1% bosses.
