I have had a happy childhood so I tend towards the optimistic.

And the way I do this is to see things in terms of development.

For instance I like to see child rearing practices improving from the sacrificial form, to the abusive form, to the authoritarian form, to the helping form.

And I like to see social development from the abolition of institutional slavery, to the emancipation of women to the freeing of children from child sexual abuse.

And I like to see political development from tribalism, to peasantry, to industrial authoritarianism to liberal democracy and the limitation of power.

Fortunately I live in country based on the Enlightenment and the idea of progress. And indeed we have the runs on the board.

So although I have a given tendency towards optimism I see much to be optimistic about.

However I am also an incrementalist, and prefer slow and steady progress, allowing us to keep our traditions and at the same time creating a better world.

Sometimes this means choosing the lesser of two evils as we progress towards the greatest good for the greatest number.

Of course the doctrine of Original Sin teaches us we are born corrupt.

But the, "Origin of Species", and the sequencing of the genome teaches us there was no Adam and Eve. And there being no Adam and Eve, there is no Original Sin.

Also we see the world is progressing around us and all we have to do limit power.

For instance, to make a President the political leader, the Head of State and the Commander-in-Chief is maximising power. And then to give this person the power to appoint Justices of the Supreme Court is piling power upon power.

This is simply not the Separation of Powers mandated by liberal democracy and the limitation of power.

And indeed such a State will make, "Liberal", a dirty word, as they have.

And so we see in such a State that power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely, driven by the military/industrial complex into permanent war with peasant and tribal States to act as a fly-wheel to smooth out the booms and busts of the economy.

We have no claim to anything, we are nothing.

Why are you yelling at air, Victor? It's pointless, its answers are only your mind making them up.

    It's like cybersex with SmarterChild.

Corrupt by a standard, namely, their standard, obviously; for one to be considered depraved, there must be a standard.

    maximising
    You spelled this incorrectly.

What are you babbling about? I don't want to discuss politics with you, or at all, for that matter. Not today anyways.

Don't drag me into your little tirade.

    This will not end well...
But it will at least be poetic, I suppose...

Hmm... But what if it does end well?
Then I suppose it will be a different sort of poetry, a preferable sort...
A sort I could become accustomed to...

America is nothing, a yawning maw of abyss that stares back at you, reflecting yourself back in its great darkness, when in all actuality, there is nothing there, absolutely nothing but great emptiness.

Victor, you fancy yourself one who fights monsters. Look at us and see what you have become.

I look at you and see what I might become, someone so enchanted by their own words that they cannot hear the voices of others.

But as an ambassador from the oldest of the young nations, I cannot spurn you away, just as the violists cannot spurn violinists. We must smile and shrug off their nasty jokes as "cute," because they know no better and are so enchanted by the sound of their own voices that they cannot hear our deep, rich sound.

This is not poetry night at the Pink Butterfly.

I haven't even any coffee or incense.

I'd like to nominate this thread as one of the weirdest.
