And the way I do this is to see things in terms of development.
For instance I like to see child rearing practices improving from the sacrificial form, to the abusive form, to the authoritarian form, to the helping form.
And I like to see social development from the abolition of institutional slavery, to the emancipation of women to the freeing of children from child sexual abuse.
And I like to see political development from tribalism, to peasantry, to industrial authoritarianism to liberal democracy and the limitation of power.
Fortunately I live in country based on the Enlightenment and the idea of progress. And indeed we have the runs on the board.
So although I have a given tendency towards optimism I see much to be optimistic about.
However I am also an incrementalist, and prefer slow and steady progress, allowing us to keep our traditions and at the same time creating a better world.
Sometimes this means choosing the lesser of two evils as we progress towards the greatest good for the greatest number.
