    Default Gulf Coast Oil Spill

    Spill Coverage

"Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the decision to designate the slick a disaster of "national significance" would allow clean-up equipment and resources from across the United States to be used."

Why on EARTH did it take them a full 7 days to do this? Why could this not have been done day one? It has progressively gotten worse and they are unable to shut it off yet.

BP spake with forked tongue. The government was assured that what they were being told by BP was on the up and up (that this was no big deal and that they could take care of it, no problem). This is what I've been hearing, anyway.

By the time the feds found out the truth, the crap was essentially hitting the coast.

    Aren't you one of those anti-government right-wingers?

We don't need Big Government tellin us what to do with our oil spills, with our tax money!! Let the private sector work it out.

I'd like to think this was a result of shrewd maneuvering by the Obama administration to turn public opinion against oil magnates, but it's probably due to general incompetence.

I actually resent the fact that my tax money is going to clean up BP's problem. They should pay every cent to fix their own accident.

I'll be upset if the government doesn't send BP a bill.

"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Personally I think once any degree of disaster takes place regarding an oil spill, that the environmental impact makes it a public concern. I'm surprised the gov didn't intercede sooner.

From what I've heard, BP will have to pay for the entire effort.

Government oversight and funds are separate. BP needs to pay for the cleanup, but the government should have designated this a national disaster long before day 7.

This is what they are reporting and I agree.

Good. I knew that companies and individuals are often charged when their crimes or negligence cause major economic issues for the government (like in California, if you are speeding and try to outrun the cops, they charge you for the cost of bringing out the police helicopter to chase you). However, there were things like Superfund and the like a few decades ago in which the government footed the bill for a lot of disaster cleanups. That is totally wrong. The government is not there to clean up private messes. They are only supposed to step in when it cannot be fixed in any other way, and they should fine/punish the companies that fucked up.
