These women were indoctrinated from birth to "know their place" in society. The banning of the burqa is not about style preferences. It's about discouraging the ingrained acceptance of gender oppression.

Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, beat the extremism out of them, literally. He established Turkey's secularist tradition through force.

Yes, it's called the Stockholm Syndrome where the captives take on the values of their captors in the interests of survival.

And like little girls everywhere they believe whatever their parents tell them, otherwise they would not grow into women.

However those with moral courage, like Ayaan Hirsi Ali, start to think for themselves.

And those with moral courage and physical courage, again like Ayaan, start to act on their own thoughts for the benefit of women held captive.

I'm not sure it could have happened any other way in that region in the 1930s.

Good thing there are all these smart MEN around to help those women see what they really need...
Your kisses, sweeter than honey. But guess what, so is my money.

A scrap of cloth to separate the two.

You, my victorious friend, a stranger seeking glory.

Commend the treasure that of mysteries beneath.

Feign interest in the plight of a gull flying against the wind.

Make of that what you will, Victor.

Instead of making me the issue once again, why not address the issue.

I can understand cognitive dissonance is emotionally painful, but why address your emotional pain with ad hominem attacks.

Ad hominem arguments are not only signs of a poor argument, but poor character.

Both Theo van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali were and are subject to ad hominem attacks, so at least I am in good company.

    Perceive what you will.

Unleash the cord that wraps around the blinkered eyes of women with a veil.

The major issue here is not a piece of cloth, as you clearly know.

Mentioning Gogh and Ali I am fairly sure is an appeal to authority.

To describe the burqa as a piece of cloth is special pleading.

As you know, across the world the burqa is a religious and political symbol.

The burqa is no more a piece of cloth than Old Glory, the flag of freedom, the flag of the USA, is a piece of cloth.

Am I a bad Muslim if I choose not to wear the burqa, then?

Am I a bad American if I choose not to fly the flag from the posts of my porch?

Will I be condemned if I choose a path other than the burqa? Perhaps, just wearing a hijab? Perhaps, dressing modestly? Perhaps, leaving it between the individual and Allah?
