Here's another good article about the Tea Party movement:

He thinks we should help people but doesn't believe that we should be 'forced to' and that socialism is bad. I pointed out that the early church was socialist and that in the OT law, landowners were required to leave grain in the fields for the poor. "Well that was a theocracy and this isn't." Once again -- So God creates a government that incorporates charity by force of law, but we have a moral objection to charity by force of law because we serve God?

I have family that receive gov health care -- not even medicare, but medicaid -- and they are dead set against healthcare reform.

They want to pretend that it's about principles. Heck, I can respect principles if a person is willing to actually live by them. Most of the time it's just people who are afraid their slice of pie is going to get smaller or somebody who 'doesn't deserve it' like they do might get a little piece. Or they are gulping down the scare tactic koolaide without checking to see if there is any validity to what they are hearing. The private insurance companies that are working with medicare/medicare are lying to people, which, if they just take five minutes to google, they would know. I guess it's more exciting to do a Chicken Little impersonation.

Seems to me they were all in favor of workers getting crapped on until it started moving up the food chain enough for them to feel the pinch themselves.
Really well said. Using Christianity as a justification for conservative social policy has always baffled me. Doesn't the Bible say, "Love thy neighbor as thyself"? And just a few of many more such passages:
"I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land" (Deuteronomy 15:11)

"He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God" (Proverbs 14:31)

"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth" (1 John 3:17-18)?

Not just a lack of empathy. More like, "Fuck all y'all--I got it for me and mine."

    Hmm, revival.

Well, it's been a few months since I made this thread, and I'm not sure what to add except that my distaste for this movement has increased with every week. I'm also sad to say that it's not quite as narrow as it used to be (though the skewing is definitely still there), which therefore means it has become more popular and expanded its power based.

I want to laugh at the tea party and its ideological kin, but lately my feelings have moved more toward a mix of fear and loathing that makes it hard to laugh.
    Go to sleep, iguana.

    Embracing fear and loathing?

Ah, another sign of a malevolent movement.

This is how the other side felt going into the 2008 presidential election.

    No lie.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. In fact, it seems to me that those who think of themselves as tea party people more readily and strongly experience things like fear, loathing, disgust, rage, etc... than I do over damn near anything. They're hysteria is part of what's frightening about them.

What's going on here between the tea party and their sympathizers, and their opponents (we don't have a cutesy name right now) is something of a ping-pong effect. Which is great, since those often precede civil wars, revolutions, etc.

And yet I've just explained to you that your fear and loathing mirrors their fear and loathing. Why is their hysteria frightening, but yours is justified?

Because I'm right and you're wrong. I just solved every political debate of all time. I deserve at least one, but probably no more than three Nobel Prizes for this discovery.
