Did the defendant's waive trial by jury first?

If not, assuming that they were forced to have a criminal trial by judge then it is an aberration of the English legal system and sign of movement toward a fascist and totalitarian society.

Criminal trial by judge is nearly as pointless as no trial at all.

If I thought I had an honest judge, I would much prefer to be tried in this format than a jury trial. Less pomp, more circumstance. But I suppose that's the rub.

    Honest judge is an oxymoron

What is a "jury of my peers" anyway? I don't know if I want the average Joe deciding my fate. Most of them are pretty stupid.

Might be "fair" in this specific case but nevertheless outrageous precedent. Other steps could have been taken like we took to protect the jury in the prosecution of John Gotti.

England is the origin of the Common Law and their decisions are persuasive in the USA, Canada and Australia among other countries. These precedents create a slippery slope for decades.

All judges are not crooks but in general it is politically expedient to find the accused guilty regardless of actual guilt or innocence.

This is exactly why I'd rather have a judge deciding my fate, given that he's honest.
