I wish it was better, but it's a start.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Well it's just funny to me; there are functioning models of universal health care all over the ENTIRE world, and yet this is the best that everyone can agree on?

It would be prudent to say - this part works best in Finland, oooh look Denmark has that, that's great, we'll take that element from Canada's plan, this is best in Britain, let's put that all together and make the bestest plan of all!

    But ... nope.

Anyhoodle I will stop my little contributions now, since the bill is passed and it will be what it will be - probably a big argument and legal battle.

    That's exactly what Taiwan did.

Nothing public ever happens here without a bunch of kicking and screaming.

That's like, normal here. But does anybody else think so? Noooo... so they're all staring and calling us barbarians when really, if you go long enough without letting the kicking and screaming get out, you end up... badly.

I was brought up in East Germany which was a Socialist country until 1989 and Socialism isn't this evil, bad thing it is portrayed to be, my mum would probably love to tell you how she misses Socialist East Germany because she had a steady, secure job and didn't have any problems whatsoever to bring up two kids on her own which would be much harder in today's society.
Well yes I often hear stories about how nice life under Stalin was too. Although I don't know if I'd cared to live in a country where a third of the population were informants for the secret police(the KGB was even impressed at how thorough the Stashi was in collecting information on people, including samples of people's scent stored in their archives).

This educational opportunity goes both ways; I hope you better understand the American aversion to the Canadian health system and its relation to the American world-view now

I tend to prefer health care and other forms of welfare to be handled at the lowest levels possible if the state needs to be involved, but primarily it should be handled by non-government agents.

Healthcare strikes me as one of those things that really needs to be public. Even if it is not explicitly handled by a pbulic institution, then the private ones that handle it need to be closely overseen by the public ones.
