Tell me, who do you think Canadian representatives fear more; their constituents or their party leadership?

True, but our current state of financial affairs does bring the question of whether or not we can actually afford this bill, both as individuals, and as a nation.

    No kidding, eh?

Virtually all European and a lot of countries in the Americas has universal healthcare systems.
    It's a really long list.

These are, according to Wikipedia, the European nations with Universal Healthcare:

Countries with universal health care include Austria, Andorra, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal,[53] Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine[54] and the United Kingdom.[55]

Most of the rest of the civilized world is at the very least trying to achieve Universal healthcare.

When Saddam tried to stop buying American debt, you hauled him out of his spider hole and hanged him as and example to the rest of us.

Also there is no other alternative to the USA dollar as the Reserve Currency of the World.

And without a Reserve Currency world trade would collapse overnight.

We all need a Reserve Currency and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of China has been touting his currency as a future Reserve Currency.

But in Oz we are very happy with the USA Dollar.

What is this monolithic "business interest" of which you speak, and how do the various political actors representing this all-powerful interest coordinate their influence to promote this ideologically undifferentiated unanimity?

It is a natural thing. Money drives the engine. Corporations have the money, they own the machine, whether they plan it that way or not, that's how it ends up.

There is no rational argument I am aware of that we could afford our current path before yesterday's insanity--hell, even before the start of Great Depression II. David Walker's solutions differ from my own, but his analysis of the situation is spot on: YouTube - U.S. Headed For Fiscal Crisis?

Unfortunately, I believe it is highly unlikely that the US will take the drastic steps needed to save itself from bankruptcy. As we saw yesterday and have seen throughout Obama's term, America is deeply, deeply in denial.

Greed is a base instinct. Easy to comprehend and understand, but hard to see in oneself and our own actions, and incredibly hard to conquer.
Right-wing politics is based upon greed and fear, to put it simply.
