Well... The reason mainly europeans keep comparing the the United States with itself is that you guys have a lot of nice things.
At the same time it is appalling to see how barbaric some of your society still is.
In some regards no safer or better than the godforsaken frontier back in the 1800's.

Little, but really important things like free healthcare, social security net, public sector.
It's sort of scary that you don't take care of your poor, sick and hungry the way we at least try to do over here in a governmental tax-funded kind of way.
Everyone's in the community, so everyone helps everyone.
Libertarians are just a bunch of anti-social, egotistical hermits who lack the imagination to understand those who are really down and out.

Anyone can have a pitfall and be low on cash for a period of time.
What the hell do you do if that coincides with disease or injury?
Buying and paying a medical insurance isn't what you prioritize when your children are hungry.

Well. It's a very blunt way of saying it, but most europeans consider you half-barbaric, belligerent and fatalistic on the whole.
If you spent all the unnecessary billions put into the various wars and military bases around the globe on stuff like healthcare, education etc...
Well, then you might qualify as something more than a retarded but strong little brother.

Mightier than the tread of marching armies is the power of an idea whose time has come

What's this? Is this like a quote or cut and pasted or something?

The US isnt barbaric or belligerent, I wouldnt prefer that way of life but I wouldnt consider it totally anathema, its good comparisons can be made.

Institutional paternalism hasnt been the dream many people hoped for.
