As far as I can tell, Puerto Ricans do not see themselves as American but as Puerto Rican (support for statehood aside), so I'm not sure how the nuance of this helps your argument. In everyday parlance, everyone here refers to the island as a país (country).

Incidentally, of all the "Puerto Rican" characteristics you mentioned, only the Spanish language aspect presents any particular obstacles as far as an "American" identity is concerned. The United States is a state-nation, not a nation-state in the European mold.
I disagree. The US is, fundamentally, a WASP nation; not a proposition nation. 50% of the population can trace its ancestry back to before the battles of Lexington and Concordia (at which time the white population was roughly 75% British), and historically Americans of old stock have worked hard to forcibly integrate the various waves of European immigrants into the WASP nation, with a relatively high level of success.

That just means you aren't conservative. Were the states East of the Iron Curtain not European because they were communist?

Europe and America are very different. i.e.

In Europe you have to prove a personal care product IS SAFE for humans. They've banned 430 chemicals used in cosmetics that cause cancer and reproductive issues in humans.

In America all 430 chemicals ARE USED in cosmetics, and there is no FDA requirement to test a personal care product before it goes to market.

The Church of England does, their debate is almost all the C of E ever makes the news for. But yeah, apart from bishops arguing amongst themselves that's true.

No, some of them are member states, I thought we were talking about the European Union, personally I'm opposed to expanding the union further or deepening it with great policy and economic convergence.

Its not an idea that conservatives, liberals or socialists are that concerned about.

Whot? Are yeu saying that, just because Botox is the single most deadly poison known on the planet, with only about 600 grams required to wipe out the entire human population of earth, that we shouldn't inject it into our faces so we look pretties when it shrivels our skin, forcing the wrinkles to seem to disappear?

Pft, europeans are so silly, thinking that being alive is more important than looking good in yeur casket.

Actually the lib dems back and support the idea of same sex marriage here in the uk. We currently have civil partnerships which provides the legal consequences of marriage, it's not enough i know but we will get there.

Well i can think of one huge difference, healthcare. We have a national health system and the US does not, unless your insured, or dying (even then i think you have to pay first?).
