You know that's interesting, once the initial qualms about authoritarianism, bullying or groupthink wore off I thought well, its a good thing that behaviour online has real world consequences and that's getting more well known, for a long time, too long maybe, the net has been treated like some fantasy playground with terrible results for some people.
There's a vigilante movement in China, they track down people who post cruelty or violence online and exact some sort of punishment, like getting them sacked from their jobs, they look for faces in footage.
interesting way to look at socialization on the internet...
scary as well... really kind of like a vigalante neighborhood watch type state- you see a wrong and you destroy the person
I can't really say that I object to the crush lady getting fired- I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a hospital and realizing that the lady bringing me dinner and giving me injections liked to kill innocent animals in a brutal way in her spare time, but some of the cases mentioned were a bit out of hand- like the girl who got kicked out of school for expressing her opinion- sure it wasn't a nice opinion, but nothing worth getting kicked out of school over
Really, kind of a mob mentality that strips people of the comfort of anonymity- and like all tools it can be used for good or bad
I'll have to think about it...
Human beings make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to invent boredom? -Terry Pratchett
