I don't really see how it's sexist. If the male restrooms were routinely in worse shape, and the quarter entry fee alleviates the problem, seems like a success.

Great reason to punish every man that comes into the restaurant.

If it solves the problem of the men's bathroom getting routinely disgustified, I'm sure the manager believes it will help them retain more customers than they lose.

That's not really the point, is it?

Yes, it's that increasing revenue isn't really a justification for sexist bathroom policy. It'd be fine if both bathrooms cost the same.

Aldi's reports that nearly 100% of people bring their carts back to the store rather than leaving them in the parking lot.
I remember that as a kid. It seemed to work well, people were careful to go get their quarter back despite $0.25 being more or less immaterial.

The local grocery store here never did that, but had a terrible rash of cart thefts. People without cars would take the carts home. Especially elderly women. The store's solution was to install brakes on the carts that activated if they left the parking lot. It's fun sometimes to count just how many carts are locked up and toppled over on the sidewalk leading out.

I don't think increasing revenue was even on their radar. A quarter a piss is not really going to add up to much. It is, however, going to limit bathroom use to actual patrons of the restaurant, and if they're having enough of a problem with random dudes going in there and shitting up the place, it's probably worth the extra hassle and a small number of dudes getting upset about it. If they don't have that same problem in the womens' bathroom then there's no need to limit it in the same way.

What reason is there to believe that non-patrons are more likely to fuck up the bathroom than patrons? Are they going to go in and check for messes immediately after every patron uses the restroom?

Besides that, they could just institute a "no bathroom use for non-customers" policy. There's no need to charge patrons to use it, but if they're going to they shouldn't discriminate based on gender.

Mm. Normally I'd agree and be somewhat irked, but a quarter seems a token amount meant simply to ward away undesirables from a specific outcome, not to produce revenue.
