Default USA: School district's webcam spy case

So what do folks think about this?

    http://www.mercurynews.com/peninsula/ci_14457137

Last week, the family of 15-year-old Blake Robbins filed a lawsuit against Lower Merion School District near Philadelphia, alleging that the school district activated the webcam in the student's school-issued MacBook to photograph him in his own home. The school district admitted that it did have the capacity to remotely turn on webcams and said that it did so 42 times in the past couple of years only to "locate a laptop in the event it was reported lost, missing or stolen so that the laptop could be returned to the student."

The Robbins family claims that an assistant principal at the district's Harriton High School accused Blake of using drugs and cited as evidence a photograph of him taken in his own home via the Mac's webcam. Blake said that the "pills" he was accused of taking were Mike and Ike candies...

If they didn't inform the students of their ability to monitor them, many people should be fired, lawsuits should be filed, and perhaps even criminal charges brought.

Seems like everyone hates this one... liberals, libertarians, conservatives. Maybe not neoconservatives.

I guess GPS would've cost too much? Seems it would've worked better for the school system's security quest.

And the photo-taking security measures are used for finding the laptops, but any other bad (and unrelated) things discovered can still incriminate a student. That trend seems to be popular when used by an "authority" position...

If you read about it my guess is that people just got over excited about new technology. "Hey, we can turn on the webcams to find the computers"

I think there are going to be more and more stories like this until standard set of "rules" are in place. The things you can do with access to people's computers....

If that's true about the assistant principal he's pretty dumb.

Isn't that picture search without a warrant?

How would it even be able to take a picture to help locate computers? It wouldn't be helpful if the computer were not on and not open... a position that people usually have the computers in while using them, not while they're put away or stolen.

    I smell a crock.

It isn't search without a warrant, it's full on spying. The implications of having a certain number of people able to spy on school children from the privacy of their own home alone should have everyone fired up about removing this and a harsh sentence for the assistant principal.
