People can't work if they are not needed for any jobs. Period. Employment isn't based on magic, it's based on demand for labor. If the United States can satisfy its consumptive demand without full employment, that is what it will do, ceteris paribus.

That less than full employment means the beginning of a deflationary spiral doesn't mean this isn't still true, it just means that outside intervention, human suffering increases.
That still doesn't translate to the US becoming a third world country.

In third world countries, you have a demand that is not being met (for education, medical care, etc). You're not talking about that, you're talking about an oversupply of skilled labor. That may involve economic stagnation, but you have yet to show how that would lead to a society deteriorating into a third world condition.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

I agree, but it is funny how a lot of people can suffer because we can't break man-made rules. I'm not a fan of communism or anything, but there should be a way to make this a good thing. In many other instances in life, less work to do means more playtime.

I think we can keep rolling on momentum as a superpower for a few more decades but the debts and deficits the government is piling on are going to slow us down untill we can't afford a first class military. This would make liberals happy since they are uneasy about America being a superpower and would perfer us to become isolatioist again. This would be bad. Maybe the government will have to print a lot of money and let inflation bring down the debt.
