To be honest I think that usually things turns into this because of US side in the "debate".
I mean it looks to me that Americans still didn't fully chew up a fact that the Iron curtain does not exist anymore.

    I am I correct ?
Not in my case, though I can understand why you would think so. One problematic aspect is that much of the Balkans (including Croatia until fairly recently) are simply not in the same league with Western Europe in terms of democratization. Also, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova are also in Europe, so sometimes the term "Western Europe" is used (inconsistently) to exclude those countries from the debate. In my mind, I was including much of historical "Eastern Europe" in my examples, but I judged it too unwieldy to clarify that point in my post.

Edit: Interestingly, when the EU attempted to apply the censorship laws of some member-states to the rest of the EU, several former Eastern Bloc nations effectively killed that notion by saying they would only go along with it if Communism were included alongside Nazism as subjects subject to such censorship.

I honestly tend to prefer "Eastern Europe" to Western Europe usually, at least in terms of culture. Then again I'm probably biased on that issue.

Freedom is the greater aim, but that it is ultimately unattainable and unsustainable without democracy; that's why I was sure to specify "liberal democracy."

I sincerely doubt that. You're more of the expert on that issue.
