Though there are many countries that massively improve the intelligence of their populace through communist systems, there are many countries that did it without -- see Japan and South Korea.

I think in the United States/Canada, some of it is through lack of educational funding, however I think most of it is there because of cultural anti-intellectualism more than anything else.

I think its largely to do with cultural factors too, mainly literacy and learning whether its fostered or disdained by the families, neighbourhoods and then media.

Consumerism and the economy might be doing a trick on everyone with the middle mind, dumbing down or whatever but that's cultural too, its chicken and egg as to whether or not its supplying or creating a need/expectation/mindset.

I don't believe there is a right vs. left, outside of the mental midget commentators on the 24 hour news channel...and the morons who listen to them.
