With that logic, almost anyone could do the job of writing.

I don't think you realize just how specialized and artistic the technical side of artistic endeavours can be. Having the right ear at the right time and the confidence to adjust one of many, many potential decisions in order ot make a mix is what separates the good from the bad from best.

You may have a false impression of what the mixer people do and how much they get paid, not to mention how much the gear can cost and who pays for that.

I think hip-pop has taken the terminology and messed it all up. In hip-pop, the producers are actually the artists. In every other genre and field across the world, the producers are the "suits".
You don't seem to understand what a producer does. The role of the producer is to bring all the individual elements together to create a product. Some might wear suits, but suit or not, it is the decision ofthe producer which decides the artistic direction.

A movie producer decides on what actors will be acting, who will direct, what is the script to use, is ultimately responsible for shooting locations, etc, etc. A movie producer guides the film production process. Notice how often the director is also the producer and whether the film could have reasonably been done the same by another director. Watch Wag the Dog. That film clearly depicts what kinds of decisions a producer makes to influence the success of a product.

A music producer decides on who or what will be playing what sounds, which studio is to be used, might decide on who is performing a vocal parts, might write a part, might farm that out to a writer, it all depends. In that regard, are hip-pop producers the same as rock music producers (bands with original material don't necessarily do more than ply their self written parts for a recording, and there are countless examples of bands which could not live up to their studio magic, because the albums were comprised of all the best bits of what they could play, not what they could seamlessly perform live), or bedroom artists who do everything themselves at home.

a producer might also produce an event, such as a concert, or trade show, or dinner gala, or , or, or... This person is responsible for the logistics of who will be performing what task, be it security, sound, lights, video, cooking, cleaning, where the event takes place, etc, etc.

This is an immense role, with a lot of responsibility riding on the shoulders. In any product, the producer is often the most stable component.

You know I was surfing some you tube animated films from when I was younger, Flight of Dragons, its a cult classic but not available any place on DVD, I no longer own a VHS player so the only way I could get access to this is to download from a file sharing website, which would be considered piracy.

This really is a supply and demand problem SOMETIMES, not all the time by any stretch of the imagination but SOMETIMES.

Yeah, I do believe in giving money where it's earned, but in cases like this, when they haven't really provided what you need, I don't really have an ethical issue with it. I have burned copies of a few tv shows that haven't been released on dvd. I don't think the line is as black and white as people try to make it, but I do think a lot of people just make excuses to get stuff for free.

There are certain other times when I just hearken back to times of earlier technology, too, for my moral compass. For instance, back in the day, we didn't think anything of making each other mix tapes or making a tape so someone could hear a song we liked. I think a certain amount of music sharing and tv sharing is okay. But I don't really get this whole generation of listeners who just flat out think they're owed free music. Like the artists' product is inferior to any other product available for purchase.

Generally, the way I feel about piracy is that I wish they'd make something worth pirating. With rare exception media in general sucks.

But when I do hear or see something I like, I do like to tip the artist...even though big corporation and manager and big government are going to suck up at least ninety cents of each dollar.

I think it be funny as hell if everyone pirated and shared everything, then wrote a check directly to the artist.

The freeloading corporations and government would whine like female canines.

I honestly don't care what the legislation is, or anything else, as long as I can download what I want to watch when I want to watch it. I don't keep it. If I want to watch it again I'll buy it.

It's all about my own wants. But if you wanna get technical, people work damn hard on a lot of creative material, and I do try and buy what I love. At the end of the day though I'll leave the debates to the people who care.

I don't even think what I do is illegal. Leeching isn't actually illegal is it? Downloading from a rapidshare link isn't illegal either. I never share music, I just download it. That's not illegal.

To continue the thread in a new direction--

What if something airs on T.V.; do you not have the right to record the video onto a VHS player? If you do, do you not also have the right to lend the video to a friend? What if your friend copies the copy, or what if you duplicate your own copy to give to your friend? What if your friend copies the video for a friend of his, who is not a friend of yours? At what point does the copying become illegal?
