Yeah, the REFUGE helpline or the women's aid one are big on stressing this when a woman calls in, as usually it's assumed it's all to do with actual violence.

I foolishly assumed assault the way it's defined in the uk and dealt with, was the same in the rest of Europe. Somehow making it a separate law didn't gel well in my head lol.

    Very efficient approach there
Similarly, under UK law a "crime of passion", which lead to death, may be admissable if the accused could establish "diminished responsibility".

The Froggies & the roastbeefs have more in common than you may think.

Not only. If the two lives separately of each other for more than two years, then the divorce can be accepted automatically.

In facts, the procedure is very similar to the one you have in the UK.

    It never made them LEGAL!

At most, it just could save your head when death penalty was still around.

And the same right applied both to husband and wife.

Pardon me, but you've got a very curious view of the French legal system. We're not THAT backwards. I'd say that France, Germany, Benelux and the UK are more or less at the same level; I mean factually, even if the names of the tribunals and courts change.

The USA, on the other hand, have a very, very different, decentralized legal system.
