So we're talking Vikings raiding monasteries, the Iraqi Republican guard, Nazi soldiers, American soldiers that rounded up Native Americans for the reservations?

I'm kinda not seeing some of the heroism here . . .
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Don't you need a military, even if a small one, to operate thermonuclear weapons effectively?
If you could be anything you want, I bet you'd be disappointed--am I right?

Ya rly. Every bit of foreign aggression against the US since the end of WWII has been blowback of some form or another.

Not one capable of "projecting power" (a euphemism for "acting imperialistically")

Not only that, the predominant nature of wars we've seen since 1945 largely renders nuclear weapons irrelevant. Their main purpose even during the Cold War was towards more geopolitical ends than actual military ones.

Spamtar, that is a very curious question. My first thought (while I research whether or not those soldiers enlisted of their own will or were conscripted) is that once you dehumanize a group of people, by changing their perception from being humans to being monsters, it is easy for others to treat them with extreme cruelty. Look no further than the treatment of First Nations people when North America was being settled. Ignorance gives people permission to be cruel. This does not excuse the Holocaust. Absolutely not. It only seeks to try to explain how people who have the potential for incredible amounts of compassion acted only out of fear.

I have no further opinions or thoughts on this matter because I have not spent enough time trying to understand their predicament.

What do you think about it?

That isn't real. The Cold War is over. Wake up.

The fact is that in today's world, I don't think certain countries could even be threatened with the mere idea of "whoo hooo you guys have some bombs that nobody actually wants to drop" with no military in place.

I've missed the bit where Iraq refused to put up a fight back because they were afraid of the American nuclear arsenal.
Nuclear weapons did and do make a large-scale war highly unlikely between countries that both have them. But they didn't prevent any proxy wars.

And yet, we still have ICBMs on hair-trigger alert. Hmm...

No, they wouldn't even bother with us. What beef would they have with us?
