Dude, I have Fi too and you really are making fucking ridiculous statements.

That's fine if you want laughs, but it doesn't work well in a serious political discussion, it just makes you look like an extremist kook.

one of my best friends got back from Afghanistan a while back and had an opinion on this topic

he said that there are some soldiers who do heroic things, there are some who are total pussies and the rest are somewhere in between- that being a soldier doesn't affect someone's heroism quotient any more than being a salesperson or garbage collector

I'll have to agree with him on that- though I disapprove of the wars, I have to recognize heroic or selfless acts when I hear of them

I feel it's a safe assumption that soldiers are not necessarily heroes, and many a soldier would be the first to say that. I imagine every soldier has encountered at least one fellow soldier who's a jackass in their military career, whom they would never want to call a hero.

In my experience most soldiers do not join the military for reasons of patriotism or heroism. Mostly they just graduate highschool (or not), and decide that the military is a steady and (interesting?) job. The perception of heroism and the public adoration come with the job.

Certainly each soldier has their own personal reasons for joining, and it definitely isn't my place to paint them with a broad brush. However I don't think that simply joining the military makes one a hero by default.

Personally I have a jaded view of basically all areas of public service (police, fire, military) which I'm sure affects my opinion.

Soldiers have sworn an oath to obey orders from military superiors unconditionally. How can you condemn them ethically for doing their duty, just because you don't agree with the person handing out orders?

Would this preclude them from an heroic action? An herioc action would, by definition, make them a hero. The initial motivation for joining up would be irrelevant.

Hero is not what you is. It's what you does.

The confusion is a confusion of language.

I dont think that blind obedience is commendable, its not heroic, by this token you'd have to award medals to the camp wardens in death camps in Germany, Bosnia, Rwanda or any place or time else.

I appreciate the point you are trying to make though.
