It's more than just a few. But it just illustrates that "the soldiers are never the problem" isn't true.

Every soldier in the field currently took an oath to risk their lives in my (and your [whether you appreciate it or not]) defense.

There is nothing more heroic than sacrifice.

They are serving something greater than themselves.

Whether their actions as soldiers actually protect you in any meaningful way is besides the point.

They are risking their lives, on your behalf.

For something to be "on my behalf", it has to serve in the interest or aid of myself. The Iraq War doesn't do necessarily that, at all. WWII did. Vietnam didn't.

So it depends on the war/conflict.

    Probably not.

It helps to humanitize war and substantiate the reality though rather than watching some drone remotely from a tv screen.

It is a soldier's responsibility to refuse to follow illegal orders. This is according to the Nuremberg trials after World War II. The judges ruled that merely following orders was not a defense against war crimes charges.

I'm a little teapot, short and stout. Here is my handle and here is my spout. Every time I steam up, I give a shout. Just tip me over and pour me out.
