Default Parity of discontents? Equality of grievances? What is the phrase?

I heard a phrase once, that was used to describe a method of compromise, the goal of which is for each side to suffer the same amount (as little as possible, while remaining equal). I don't remember the phrase. Does anybody know? Is this a well-known concept? I think the context was the settlement of WW1 or 2.

Curious because I keep coming back to this as the best was of explaining my concept of morality. For example, you should do someone a favor when the inconvenience to them of you not doing it is greater than the inconvenience to you of doing it.

Great thread, I dont know what it is though, I only know about the reparative treaties during the period between the wars and those were really punitive towards Germany, victors justice.

I take it the parity of discontents comes from the vogue for parity of esteem? I really dont know how that is deliverable at all, esteems a pretty internal issue really.

I'm pretty sure it was after WW2; and it was supposed to be the method the Allies would use to settle the division of territories that Germany had taken over and lost. But I'm looking it up and can't find any mention of it.
