In the summertime, my Grandfather's front porch would be covered in tiny holly blossoms, like a blanket of snow. We would open up the windows and let the breeze carry the scent inside. And because the house was old, the old wooden floors would smell a bit like oak when the humidity got high. I used to love sitting on the cool floors when it was hot outside, just listening to people going by outside. Being southern to me means tranquility, and belonging to something older and bigger than myself. Like being rooted in our own special kind of history, good and bad. Don't you feel like going home is like the ground singing at your feet, like it knows you're home too?
Sounds amazing. I'm telling you, if I wasn't in love with my own hometown, I'd head down to Dixie. My mother's side of the family is Southern (North Carolina), and I'm already thinking of excuses for a visit...

Also...Cimarron...I agree that leaving the South makes one appreciate it all the more. People who have never left West Virginia are like "why did you come back here?" and I just smile.
You're the only person I've ever known who has referred to West Virginia as "the South." It's refreshing - I've never quite been able to categorize WV as part of any region... it's hard enough with Maryland, but at least we clearly fit into the mid-Atlantic label, you know? So it is decided: from now on, I will refer to WV as "the south."

I think WV is definitely culturally Southern. We have some family there, near Pipestem. OMG, gorgeous.

What part of the state is Pipestem? I'm really only familiar with the Eastern panhandle - Harpers Ferry, Berkeley Springs, Martinsburg...

I love how the negativity continues. Some people just get off on being a douche I guess.

To continue with the OP. Things that rock about the south:
Louisiana is part of the South.
We fix everything with butter, lard, salt, peppers, or animal fat.
Kantgirl: Just say "I'm feminine and I'll punch anyone who says otherwise!"
Halla74: Think your way through the world. Feel your way through life.

Cimarron: maybe Prpl will be your girl-bud
    prplchknz: i don't like it

West Virginia is extremely culturally Southern, without question, and until the Civil War was Virginia, which is indoubtedly the South.

I also spent two years in Virginia proper and ten years in coastal North Carolina during my growing-up years. My mother's mother's side of the family is from North Carolina and I still have relatives there.
