It's sad and tragic, but I couldn't help psychoanalyzing the psychiatrist.

What was the thought process for someone trained to deal with psychological stress in a constructive way to do something like this?

Was it: "What the hell! If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?"

So apparently he was facing harassment over his ethnicity, and even hired a military attorney to try and resolve the issue and pay back the government to get out of the military. He had been making requests not to be deployed to Iraq for years, but just got word that he was, and snapped.

We shouldn't need to keep people like that in the military against their will, but we do have to, because there is no draft and we're fighting two wars.

According to this article, he was actually going to be shipped out to Afghanistan. I don't disagree with your sentiment entirely, but the war in Afghanistan has/had a lot more justification than Iraq.

The article in the OP doesn't say anything about Afghanistan, it says he was to be deployed to Iraq.

There was no official word on motive. But Hasan was scheduled to be deployed overseas on Nov. 28, officials said. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said military officials had told her that Hasan was “pretty upset” about his deployment, which she said was to be to Iraq.
All recent articles say Iraq as well.

Army: 12 dead, 31 hurt in attack at Fort Hood - Yahoo! News

"Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said generals at Fort Hood told her that Hasan was about to deploy overseas. Retired Col. Terry Lee, who said he had worked with Hasan, told Fox News he was being sent to Afghanistan."

Someone got it wrong at some point.

If this had happened to an enemy country's army it would be considered a good thing.

    Well, yes.

That's how it works. Our heroes are our enemies villains, and our villains are our enemies heroes.

That is the nature of being aligned with a particular side.

    There is no Iraq.
The British inherited the Ottoman lands.
Unnatural borders do not define a country.

    A country is first born.
    It exists within a framework.
In other words, it has natural borders.
