    Default Mermaid Girl died

Maine girl with ‘mermaid syndrome’ dies at 10

‘Tough little thing’ gained following on Internet, TV
PORTLAND, Maine - Shiloh Pepin, a girl who was born with fused legs, a rare condition often called "mermaid syndrome," and gained a wide following on the Internet and U.S. television, has died. She was 10.

Doctors had predicted she would at most only survive for days after her birth. The girl died at Maine Medical Center on Friday afternoon, hospital spokesman John Lamb said. She had been hospitalized in critical condition for nearly a week.

Being born with "mermaid syndrome," also known as sirenomelia, meant that the Kennebunkport girl had only one partially working kidney, no lower colon or genital organs and legs fused from the waist down.

This is what happens when you keep a mermaid from the ocean too long... har har.

Don't mind me--I saw her documentary and ended up hating her. Still too bad though. With age, maybe she would have grown to be a pleasant person. The world will never know.

What did she die of, and why were they able to stop it up to now?

    That's so sad.
    I think it was pneumonia.

I empathize, Ben. She'd be nice with chips. And tartare sauce.

In Denmark, several years ago, a good-looking girl was, in bar parlance, called a "sild"... a little fish.

I think there's an island next to Schleswig-Holstein called Sild, or The Ballerina - a nickname.

Maybe she was trying to be a ballerina, but never got past the little fish stage.

    It happens.

When a person is born with sirenomelia, the problems go beyond the obvious fused legs... the internal organs of the lower abdomen are usually affected, either abnormally formed or absent. The child usually has no external genitalia, and the urethra and rectum are usually formed into a single cloaca. The condition usually results in stillbirth, but a lucky (?) few children survive past birth. For a short while.

This disorder is a great case for abortion. What kind of parent would put their kid though that kind of life? I'm sure most don't fare as well as this girl did.

I would bet that the vast majority of cases of this disorder are in fact aborted, if they haven't already miscarried and are diagnosed in utero. Not everyone gets ultrasounds.
