Default Why does this subforum turn into gloating about political gains for your own party?

Really guys, it's getting a little predictable who's going to post what.

The liberals always post pro-liberal news and the conservatives tend to just post anti-liberal news. The OP then proceeds to gloat about it while the opposite side comes in and complains, and rarely does anyone actually say anything meaningful.

It's as if people think reposting one news story somehow implicitly shows why your party/ideology/social group is better than everyone else's.

"Obama gets bad approval ratings...HAH! THAT PROVES IT HE'S A BAD PRESIDENT I KNEW IT!!!!"

Boring, predictable, and most of all irrelevant.
If you could be anything you want, I bet you'd be disappointed--am I right?

It depends on how you frame the thread. Risen could have made a meaningful thread about Obama's approval ratings, it might have been boring, but not totally irrelevant. But he set it up like his Collectivism thread, just a rant.

But if a liberal or conservative makes a thread and tries to frame it objectively, or asks a legitimate question on a relevant topic, that's better.

Because the people who post here are confident, biased, have a perspective that leans one way or the other, and want to convince others to come around to their way of thinking.

In some cases, they may even be arrogant enough to think that their slant reflects universal truth, and that everyone else's perspective is based on delusion or dishonesty.

With that attitude, I'm ready to head back inside one.

At this point, you know exactly who will say what and what comments will set them off.

Are we naming names here? I don't think that's a good idea, people will get defensive.
Relationships have normal ebbs and flows. They do not automatically get better and better when the participants learn more and more about each other. Instead, the participants have to work through the tensions of the relationship (the dialectic) while they learn and group themselves and a parties in a relationships. At times the relationships is very open and sharing. Other time, one or both parties to the relationship need their space, or have other concerns, and the relationship is less open. The theory posits that these cycles occur throughout the life of the relationship as the persons try to balance their needs for privacy and open relationship.

Yeah, remember how defensive communists got when McCarthy unfairly asked them to name names, with the unfounded assumption that Communists were aiding our enemies? Well, people haven't quite gotten over that, and still tend to view naming names as an unfair way of slamming people. Which it can be.

People have always been tribal, and remain so.

I think that's all the answer we need right there.

We can name names. The people who tend to freak out and get banned on this forum aren't the political junkies.

Maybe we should set up a formal debate where two people agree to debate for the opposite side they actually agree with. I wonder if they could do it without going back to their original position? Of course by doing so, they would be losing the debate. It might stir things up in a good way.
