    Parents Throwing Swine Flu Parties

Doctors Warn The Parties Are Extremely Harmful

    John Gadson

    September 4, 2009

ST. LOUIS, MO - It isn't a trend exactly sweeping the nation, but some parents are throwing "Swine Flu" parties so their children will intentionally be exposed to the illness. Doctors warn parents these parties can be extremely harmful to children. Some parents say they believe if their kids are exposed to the H1N1 strain early, they'll only come down with a more mild case. Doctors at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center say it's a bad idea.

Infectious Disease Specialist, Doctor Dennis O'Connor says he doesn't understand why people would want to have such a party. "Intentionally exposing your child to the virus has no medical benefit at all."

Doctors say it also comes with dangers and could mean your child becomes more ill. Dr. O'Connor says how sick you become depends on how many of the viruses you are exposed to.

Medical professionals say the best way to avoid H1N1 is to continually wash your hands. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are also very effective.

Catching it early isn't THAT big a problem... it's biggest risk is that it can mutate into something nasty, which it hasn't done yet, so the concept has merit.

...Except... yeur body can only fight off viruses so easily. Usually yeu get a TINY dose to start with, and fight that off relatively well. Being exposed to 10X the starting amount means it'll have several hours head start before the immune system can get to work killing it, meaning it's very likely to be far more dangerous, and turn into a much more serious problem.

Singular exposure still has risks, as ANY flu has the potential for death... not just this one. This one's just getting larger media coverage. The flu is never something to be trifled with.

People in Missouri are apparently as backwards as doctors who use leeches. Come to think of it, the state's name sounds a lot like "misery." It reminds me of that episode of Fairly Oddparents called "Shelf Life" where Tom Sawyer came out of the book and said, "As they say in Missouri, 'I ain't goin' back to Missouri!'"

This is such a crude, practical way to be... intentionally exposing the kids at the same time so they'll develop immunity. Even with diseases that works well with, how heartless can you get? There's no good excuse for making your child sick if they don't have to be. These people should be charged with child abuse! It's an outrage!
