    I think you underestimate how big and deep of a pit the Republican Party was in after the Great Depression and New Deal. They had a LONG way to climb. Until the Civil Rights Act, they could only elect a war hero to the Presidency, even though they generally represented the economic elites in those days.

    There was a Conservative Coalition that controlled Congress for the vast majority of the period from the beginning of FDR's 3rd term to Kennedy's taking office in 1961.
