Liberia has such a great name for such a fucked-up country.

Generally, libertarians believe that public social safety nets should be temporary, conditional, and administered at the lowest possible level of government. Also, American history has shown that charitable donations increase when tax burdens decrease, and we have also seen that minority poverty has decreased after welfare reform in the mid-1990s.
That's a nice assertion, but where are the numbers?

You can read about it, and get numbers, in Ron Paul's The Revolution.

    RON PAUL!!!!!

I never thought a Houston politician who wasn't completely dirty (*cough*TomDeLay*cough*) would get as much national play as he did.

Yes, and he's not even a Libertarian. But I dig him anyways.

Yeah he's way too much of a fundamentalist whackjob for that. But then again, you aren't getting elected in Brazoria County unless you are precisely that.

I met Ron Paul last year at Future of Freedom Foundation event. He is certainly not perfect (his views on abortion and immigration do not gel with mine, to put it mildly), but I respect what he has achieved within the GOP, especially considering the area he represents. I like Jeff Flake of Arizona quite a bit, too.

HAHA!!! Allow me to expand the 'fuck you' categorization:

Communism: "Fuck you, you won't have anything. We have it!"
Socialism: "Fuck you, we're gonna take your stuff and redistribute it 'justly.' Wait a minute, might as well just say, 'Fuck you,' and leave it at that."
Liberals: "Fuck you, if you have a lot, give it to other people! You don't deserve to have shit."
Centrists: "Fuck you, we're all equal. Not really, but I can get in your pants better that way."
Conservatives: "Fuck you, I'm gonna get mine - or yours - but I'm gonna get it either way."
Libertarians: "Fuck you, don't you dare touch my shit. I'm an egocentrist bastid, and you're stupid."
National socialists: "Fuck you and die! Literally!"

So what can we conclude? There's a lot of fucking politics. Or fucking going on in politics. Either way, it isn't good for the rest of us.

It's funny how similarly we think about certain things. I also disagree with Paul's stance on those issues. And I've had my eye on Flake for a while now, even though he's a Mormon.

Ron Paul is the best example of what an electable Libertarian looks like in real life. He might carry the name "Republican" and differ from Libertarians on a few issues, but Libertarian is the closest ideology that he follows. In reality our elected officials aren't pure Democrat or Republican in their views anyway. That is just the party that they chose to belong to. The ideologies are a nice starting place when it comes to thinking about the issues, rather than some kind of gold standard that a person should slavishly cling to.
