    You are incorrect.

Government, while necessary, is inherently dangerous and must be guarded with vigilance and skepticism by those from whose consent its authority is derived. It's best kept to the bare minimum of authority and scope required to perform its functions.

The legitimate functions of government are threefold:

    1. Secure the borders.
    2. Provide a domestic justice system.
    3. Practice diplomacy.

Providing for a currency might be a fourth function, but it's debatable. All else is tyranny.

Funny. In one of my classes, I was taught that one of the most basic functions of a government was the provision of public goods. Would you consider such an act tyranny, then?

The concept of "public goods" is a tyrannous construct.

    Government provisioned currency? No way!

Check out "free banking," or, more specifically, an author named George Selgin.

Letting government control the money supply is about the worst kind of economic intervention.

Government should do the basics: internal defence (police and courts), external defence (military), and border controls. (By the way, I favour extremely easy migration across all borders, but some controls are sensible for judicial reasons.)

Beyond the above, I am not completely averse to some kind of government "safety net" (albeit extremely limited), the provision of some public goods, and regulation of basic externalities. But I would demand that their expansion be strictly curtailed by constitutional and institutional constraints, and I would also prefer the private sector to fulfil these functions where possible, (because sometimes technology needs to catch up before something can be properly privatised).

I would abolish 85% of the current U.S. government.
A criticism that can be brought against everything ought not to be brought against anything.

I bet it pisses you off that people haven't found a way to privately own swaths of breathable air yet.

But they (politicians and lobbyists) worked hard to take that money!
