    Default Cultural recentism

We in the western world don't go to war with neighboring countries anymore.

    They did all that before.

Before, people in the western world were war-mongering savages.

We in the western world now have equal opportunity, womens rights and freedom of religion.

They didn't have any of that hundreds of years ago.

    What were they thinking?

All the truly modern countries in the world are spending less on military and instead propagate a peaceful, humanistic world view. Just like Sweden.

If it catches on, no-one will keep armies anymore.

Before, nations focused on defence to maintain their sovereignity. How uninventful.

Recentism: Tendency to concentrate on recent events, world views and contemporary mindset without historical perspective.

    A very shallow perspective IMO.

I was really annoyed at some person trying to proof how rulers of the old - he named several - were murderous, terrible people, justified by their use of death sentence, and occasionally going to a war.

I was thinking the all time: because of the widespread knowledge of history, raised living standards, appreaciation of philosophy, consumer culture, humanism, etc. is easier to handle population with non-violent means nowadays.

There weren't such a wide array of non-violent solutions available for population control back then. Maintenance of prison system is a large expenditure. There weren't nearly as good information systems to assess the criminal history of anyone; if someone would have been let loose after a great enough crime, they would've moded elsewhere and repeated their behavior.

I'm not advocating death sentence or archaic moral standards here. I'm just telling, everything done in the past had to be done with the means available in the past.

No, that will not happen. Capabilities of defense (and possibly offense) will remain a large part of international relations.

It's just how civilization works; we become more civilized over the years. Hundreds of years from now people might look back at us and see savages, just as we see the methods of past societies to be savage.

Of course. The pacifist sentiment is just strong in Northern Europe. I'm glad some people support the idea of nations and people being in peace, but how much of a pacifist can a nation be at any one time, practically?

The idea of Europe being an exporter of peace is a relatively new. Many people don't even want to put it in practice. Regarding those willing to maintain national defence as "silly" or "warmongering" doesn't show much historical perspective. Even though I liked the nations would voluntarily put their guns down. I'd even like my own country to show initiative in peace. But.

I should have stated clearly that the statements in the OP were for discussion, not for declaration of my beliefs.

    No current incentive or gain.
