Default A student commits suicide at school after getting caught using a mobile phone.

    This happened in Sri Lanka
BBC NEWS | South Asia | Mobile ban in Sri Lanka schools

She could have been watching Porn or talking to her boy-friend which of it is the reason to commit suicide is unknown.
Even if it is any of these is it really a reason big enough to tie her school tie and jump from a window and commit suicide?

And the actions taken by the government is to ban phones from school.

Well i don't mind that, but why couldn't they have promoted counseling?
Or go lenient on school rules.
She obviously must have been threatened by the school prefects.

I think these stupid rules against porno should be banned not cell phones.

But anyway she got her 15 minutes of fame after she died. too bad.

That's horrible. It bothers me how someone felt compelled to take their lives over something like a mobile phone. Even if that wasn't the real reason then there's still the problem that she's compelled in the first place.

Won't that make the problem worse? I mean, they hung themselves because there was a rule against them in the first place... so obviously the punishment is going to be as bad or worse now, meaning that if a kid brings one in, the same situation is likely to recur.

She was said to have been watching Porno.

    Why?
Maybe the prefects (upper graders selected to enforce rules at schools) threatened her?

    Nuh... i think it's a 1 in a million occurrence.

But the actions taken by the government is what bothers me.
    Banning pornography.

They put the blame on porn and they are banning/blocking all porn sites in Sri Lanka (god bless their soles, considering the amount of porn sites in the world.)

Everyone watches porn. That is the only sex education we get. Banning it is not the best thing to do.

Maybe they should start something like sex education or counseling (if a mental issue was the case.)

Actually I'm more inclined to think perhaps it's due to strict upbringing. Reminds me of japanese school children who commit suicide due to failing the education system. What's the legal punishments for viewing porn?

Seems more like a cultural issue concerning the relationship between school, student, and parent. Mobile phones just happen to be the object of scrutiny.

I don't think banning things in general is usually a good solution to the problem. It was probably the poor girl going through personal difficulty rather than the phone that caused her suicide. It seems like every time there is any sort of accident, governments want to find an excuse to take more power rather than address the real problems.

Not that serious. Distribution of porn is illegal and there will be a court hearing of some sort. Max 2 3 years in prison. But watching porn does not have serious consequences... YET.

    Thank God this ain't IRAN.

    Oh yeah,
That school she was from is known to be one of the most strict in SL.
    And it's a girl's only private school.
This is the third time a student committed suicide in that same school.
