I had considered Pol Pot, but wasn't sure if my knowledge of him was correct. Didn't he kill a good three million people? It still is a ton of people, and he's definitely in the top 5.
Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way?

It was something like that. He wiped out something crazy like 40% of his own population. They still don't even like talking about it in Cambodia.

Going with Digest's god theme.....I'll say the catholic church. Between the crusades and indigenous population exterminated because they wouldn't convert/conform they probably take the cake. Although tough to narrow it to one person.

The US government is up there in my mind.

Let's see, by direct and indirect means... millions of Natives dead, plenty of slaves as well. Then there's the obvious wars that also directly or indirectly caused massive losses of lives, as well as inhumane trade policies that have starved or otherwise killed hundreds of thousands (if not millions). Oh, and not to mention the indirect propping up of governments and paramilitaries that have inflicted generous amounts of murder in foreign lands. Due to its sheer influence across the globe, the US gvt. has increased the influence of death upon various people in various ways.

I mean, you could easily argue the same for a few other powerful empires, mostly due to colonialists aims, but the US hasn't been around for very long in contrast...

If you add Empires/Nation-States the Spanish Empire would be up there as well.

Pol Pot was the United States too... during the Vietnam "conflict" we dropped bombs on the Cambodian border, destabilizing the country. Rural Cambodians were convinced that they were under attack by the US (technically they were, no?) and the Kumar Rouge flourished. Genocide in the 1970's after we had supposedly learned our lessons in Germany and Russia.

Great first person narrative about it called First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers by Loung Ung. Amazing woman, I had the privileged of meeting her at an event at the university. She's trying to get all of the landmines removed from her country and get prosthetic limbs for those who are still being injured there. Sad.

If we're talking pathogens, influenza has been estimated to have killed between 50 and 100 million people thus far. And every year, it kills 3x as many Americans as those who succumb to AIDs.

I'm not discounting the severity of AIDS by any means... non-epidemic influenza picks on the weak and elderly anyhow.

The problem with HIV/AIDS is that the very act of reproduction spreads it. The problem with influenza is that it spreads so rapidly and children can get sick/die much more quickly than with HIV/AIDS.

The touche stands though, I should have thought of flu... I'm in Texas and a few months ago we had a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu. The CDC closed every school and childcare center in the county. I just *happened* to get a cold that week and had to have a very unpleasant nasal swab before I could send my child back to school.
