Default Diversity is Good for Group Function

Please, state your opinions towards that statement, and give reasons.

I'll give my own after the thread has gotten a little bit long.

Diversity of ideas and perspectives can be good for group function, however I find diversity of things like race/gender/handicap is unimportant.

Interesting. Do you think diversity of race/gender/handicap feeds into diversity of ideas?
Relationships have normal ebbs and flows. They do not automatically get better and better when the participants learn more and more about each other. Instead, the participants have to work through the tensions of the relationship (the dialectic) while they learn and group themselves and a parties in a relationships. At times the relationships is very open and sharing. Other time, one or both parties to the relationship need their space, or have other concerns, and the relationship is less open. The theory posits that these cycles occur throughout the life of the relationship as the persons try to balance their needs for privacy and open relationship.

I definitely agree that diversity helps make things more interesting. I agree with jock though that diversity of ideas and perspective can be good for group functioning.

In my experience it does, but then you typically get called a racist or a sexist when you imply a certain background can tend to shape your ideas.

But in the end, the differences in life experiences are all that matter, unless it's a Pepsi commercial or University brochure, in which case I can infer that true diversity comes from people who look different.

I think differences in life experiences are often shaped by and a direct result of in things like sexuality/gender/race/handicap. Looking different counts for a lot.

The statement is a vague. What sort of diversity?

Diversity in skill obviously makes a group more capable of dealing various problems, and delegating responsibilities for certain roles to specialists, thus increasing efficiency and stability.

On the other hand, diversity of goals or motives, values if you will, tends to freeze a group in place or destroy it all together. If people aren't aiming for the same things, the groups functioning gets bogged down by the need to manage disagreements, plans stop working because of a lack of coordination in how they are to be formed, and the structure gets sabotaged by conflicts.

Diversity in perception sort of floats half in half there. It can cause communication and comprehension problems that staggered the group's functioning, but the exchanging and comparing of perspectives can be innovative and enhance flexibility, which might prevent the group from being destroyed by presumptuousness.

Oh certainly. All those things have a lot to do with how you are shaped.

However, who is more different? People that look differently but think alike, or people who look the same but think differently?

Some diversity = good, too much diversity = no common grounds

    Magic described it well.
