It may be that the state just didn't prove its case. Sometimes that happens. Prosecutors get their balls busted by judges when it does, too.

If the facts weren't proven, the news bit should have said alleged... Yeah, you're right, as if news reports are factual.. :P

What a letdown. I was hoping you were gonna say Jesus had come back.

I get not allowing your kid to have sex at 13 that is young, but piercing them for pain and making them unattractive i don't get. And her mom's like i put her on the pill, but she still has sex. I would probably do the same thing, because I figure if she's gonna have sex i can't exactly stop her, i can try and I'll be damned if my hypothetical daughter comes home knocked up.
    In no likes experiment.

    that is all

i dunno what else to say so

Sure you can. It's just a matter of how far you're willing to go to do it.

Moving the entire family to British Columbia, somewhere fifty miles from the end of the nearest paved road, might do it. Short of that you can maintain 24/7 supervision. Yes, it's possible. Neither easy nor fun, but possible.

I think what she did was worse than what her daughter did. What her daughter did was irresponsible, and would have had it's own natural consequences if she had kept it up.

What she did... was unacceptably cruel. As far as I'm concerned, parental discipline should be limited to certain boundaries. It's hard to define them precisely, but I think she crossed over a big one.

I'm curious... do you agree that girl's mother crossed over a certain line? Do you think that there is such a thing as "too far"?

OF COURSE there's such a thing as too far, and this mother was over the line by about... oh... six miles.

Involuntary genital piercing as a behavior-modification tool? Man, that's just wrong.

Just wanted to make sure we were agreed on that one. You didn't actually say how you felt about it at first.

That said, I think there should be discouragement of undesired behaviors. I just think that anything that could cause lasting physical damage should pretty much be off the table. Emotional scars should be avoided as well, but people are so different emotionally that it's harder to say where that line is.

Discipline can cross the line from guidance to simple cruelty and traumatization at a certain point. Just like good law enforcement can become tyranny at a certain point. Extremes are usually bad.
