    Default Does morality have a place in politics?

    What are your thoughts on the recent rise of sensationalist morality in politics (i.e. Bill O'Reilly)?

    I'm of the opinion that if republicans don't get over their socially conservative agenda they will find themselves increasingly irrelevant on the national stage. What initially served to galvanize their core constituency, has now become an increasingly divisive approach to politics that has alienated many of their less extreme members.

    This goes both ways, however I can't think of any specifically democrat oriented gripes on the subject.

    Do you think this alienation is reflective of changing voting demographics?

    Of course it does. There is no such thing as politics without morality. Every single piece of legislation considered has a moral component to it.

    The idea that politics should be amoral comes from Machiavelli.

    So what you're really being asked is, "Are you Machiavellian?"

    And... I am!

    If by sensationalist you mean conservative, then no it doesn't. Then again, I'm more of a liberal than a conservative, so my thoughts there aren't surprising.

    That's quite a loaded question. Can you define "sensationalist morality"? Because all you gave was a television host who I admit I don't watch except every once in awhile when someone sends me a link.

    I think there are always extremists on either end of the spectrum who will sensationalize events to shift opinions. I think they can be disregarded. However, I do want my leaders to represent me in a manner that I can be proud of. That's not strictly speaking a "moral" directive, but it would be nice if they found a way to keep their indiscretions to themselves.

    Guess you really have to define the boundaries of morality or the PoV or its interpretation before you go all machiavellian about it.

    You're not talking about morality so much as preaching.

    And the democrats just won an election based on preaching so I'd say preaching will be around for a while.

    Without morality there's no need for democratic systems. The whole thing is designed to serve the subjective wishes of the many.

    If you want to get rid of morality in politics then you'd be getting rid of the modern politician. Reason dictates, it doesn't plead or suggest.

    Morality = politics.
    Politics = morality.

    The basis for all political authority is on standards of morality. Right or wrong. Otherwise, you would be unable to make a decision. Issues of fairness, rights, and authority all deal with the moral basis for life and for conduct.

    --------------------------------

    morality
    n., pl. -ties.

    1. The quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct.
    2. A system of ideas of right and wrong conduct: religious morality; Christian morality.
    3. Virtuous conduct.
    4. A rule or lesson in moral conduct.

    politics:

    1 a: the art or science of government b: the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy c: the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government
    5 a: the total complex of relations between people living in society b: relations or conduct in a particular area of experience especially as seen or dealt with from a political point of view <office politics> <ethnic politics>
