1. How would you protest against it? Not simply by standing there and looking grim, I hope?

I'm not saying not watching it will stop it from happening (in the short-term, at least), I'm saying that I think attending it (even as a protestor) would make it psychologically easier for the executioner to do what he's being paid to do. And if you don't support the death penalty, that's not a desirable outcome.
No there are alot fo things you can do.
You can throw stones at the executioner
You can kill both the executioner and the executed with a rifle
you can sell tickets to people who want to watch the show
the opportunities are limitless......

OK, so why do people think people attended them in the past?
Society is different back then. Tarring and feathering... if you're not there to "support" the cause, then you and your family might as well be the next target. As to criminals... it's a "popular" thing to attend. I think they make it like a sporting event and sell food etc on the side lines. Not to mention mob behaviour is completely irrational...
