Default Love I.E.D.s "Lovelorn Iraqi Men Call on a Wartime Skill"

    Link to NY Times Article

    Clip:
BAGHDAD — It goes like this: Boy meets girl. They exchange glances and text messages, the limit of respectable courting here. Then boy asks girl’s father for her hand. Dad turns him down. Boy goes to girl’s house and plants a bomb out front.

The authorities call it a “love I.E.D.,” or improvised explosive device, and it is not just an isolated case. Capt. Nabil Abdul Hussein of the Iraqi national police said that six had exploded in the Dora neighborhood of Baghdad alone in the past year.

“These guys, they face any problem with their girlfriends, family, anyone, and they’re making this kind of I.E.D.,” Captain Hussein said....
This is more than just a wartime dysfunction, right? Pair that with a larger, longer tradition of societal dysfunction and this is the tragic result. --That's my initial reaction, but I'll return later today with more organized thoughts.

It sounds like being in hell. All of it. I don't understand anyone's psychology that leads them to make such a decision.

I saw some man on the news the other day -- the home owner's association was riding him because he wasn't walking his dog on a leash. Other people in the neighborhood were doing the same thing, so it was pretty hypocritical, but the guy responded to this "slap on the wrist" with "I have an arsenal of guns". Unbelievable. Again, where's the A to B sanity of logical decision making?

I think if you have a high density of unsecured weapons and weapon making going on in any residential area, it will undoubtedly start to show up in relationship related disputes.

Why do they have such easy access to explosives???

On the good side, they are not throwing acid in the girls' faces.

Well considering this is a war-zone; all sorts of crazy shit often happens in such that normally wouldn't in more peaceful times. You're surrounded by death and explosions anyways; so doing something like this wouldn't have the same effect on you as it would in more normal circumstances.

To add onto what I stated above:

"Being a soldier is a very severe test of character to which very many men give way under, exhibiting themselves in such unenviable characteristics that if they could see themselves as others see them, and have [n]ot lost their instincts of decent humanity not a few would very much like committing suicide."
--Lafayette McLaws, cited in General Lee's army: from victory to collapse pg. 232

The article above states that many of the men doing this are former soldiers and insurgents. That doesn't surprise me to be honest.

I'd say it might be the fact that they live in a war zone. It'd be pretty easy to learn how to make a bomb with terrorists and such living in the area.

^ It's really not that hard to make a crude explosive from household items anyway. Look at the Unabomber.
