"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

the very expression "ideal government" is an oxymoron to me. government is the result of things and people not being ideal.

    Sort of this, yeah.

Overall, government needs to butt out of certain matters and get involved in certain others.

Well considering America is supposed to be a republic, and wasn't supposed to be constrained to a "two-in-one" part system, and the fact that that's what the constitution was originally structured around, it's hard for me to placate to the idea of "American democracy" as being any sort of legitimate description. What we have now is a democratic republic, barely democratic. I would argue that the democratic part (certain aspects of it) of this mix has opened us up to some horrible government dis-functionality. It would be difficult for me to say that a more pure republic is the better system, simply because it didn't last long in this country, and I know little about most other republics since Rome. Still, those who argue on the side of democracy know not the history of such a system, and how a pure democracy is purely dysfunctional, hence why most modern "democratic" countries adopt a democratic-republic hybrid in the image of our modern system.

And in case I didn't make it clear, STOP CALLING THIS A DEMOCRACY!!!

I can't really answer based on a type of government. Man makes the government, how ideal it is really dependent on the character of man. I've already pondered that if people had the will to participate, any of the governmental systems could work better than any real government is working right now (yes, even fascism).

In reality though, where human beings are so limited and irrational, it's hard to know what works. I figure it stands to reason that there must be some sort of government most ideal for the people we have here, but the issue is so complex that I cannot begin to touch it. I have general impressions of what I want, based loosely on the stability of the system and the production of well-being for its citizens. But they are vague ideas, and I'm well aware that I could be wrong.

Even then, different people have different cultures, and that makes perscribing any ideal government even harder, unless you have a very, very sophisticated cultural engineering program in mind, and believe that some cultures are objectively better than others (good luck with that).

What's the best type of government? Self-government.

If we all had plenty of that, we wouldn't need much of any other kind.

Nothing's perfect but I like the canadian style of government. Power seems spread decently enough, parties and platforms change often. Sure the opposition parties whine like yappy dogs, but that's their job, and it does keep things in check.

Overall, and based on which countries have the highest quality-of-life, I'd give it to social democracy.
