    Default If South Dakota Seceded...

Bonkers in Georgia: Hendrik Hertzberg: Online Only: The New Yorker

I don't know how representative this is, but I couldn't help but notice when I was hearing about this that South Dakota was mentioned.

Umm, call me nave -- I've never lived in mountain states -- but how would South Dakota actually be able to support itself if it seceded? Would the United States try to take it back? Would they try to take North Dakota with them to get a strategic border with Canada? Would the Canadians be sympathetic to their cause? What'd they do with Mount Rushmore if they seceded, anyway?

I don't know if this is the right place for speculation, but this has been bothering me for days and I knew this was the only place I'd be able to spark discussion on it.

Well, it's an interesting question, but the only reason it has any real life relevance is this: Republic of Lakotah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I doubt that's going anywhere, but if it did, it sure has hell would be interesting. My first, of many, suggestion for them is to expand that territory through North Dakota so that it has a Canadian border. It sucks to be completely surrounded by one country. Besides, plenty of Sioux are in Canada, and while I know not all Sioux are Lakotah, I don't they should be making too big a deal out of that in these times.

Oh noes, SD has discovered the secret Canadian plans to invade them.

    It's not secession, it's surrender.

I shouldn't be revealing all this, these plans are secret you know. SD likely has more guns than all of Canada. We need those if we are gonna go after the jewel that is Minnesota.

If South Dakota gets to, so does California. Or at least Northern California.

I think they'd have that minor problem of.....being completely ignored and being thrown in jail (if they decided to interfere with anything in the US.).

If South Dakota seceded. The US government would refuse to recognize it, and would retake it by force if they decided to begin acting as an independent country. Alternatively...cut them off from everything and just wait for them to give up.

But we'd still have Texas. What about that? Could they go too?
