I don't know how representative this is, but I couldn't help but notice when I was hearing about this that South Dakota was mentioned.
Umm, call me naïve -- I've never lived in mountain states -- but how would South Dakota actually be able to support itself if it seceded? Would the United States try to take it back? Would they try to take North Dakota with them to get a strategic border with Canada? Would the Canadians be sympathetic to their cause? What'd they do with Mount Rushmore if they seceded, anyway?
I don't know if this is the right place for speculation, but this has been bothering me for days and I knew this was the only place I'd be able to spark discussion on it.
