Prohibition of alcohol is proof of that.

Making these highly coveted substances illegal has produced such an extraordinary level of power for the drug lords. Mexican drug kingpin "El Chapo" made the Forbes billionaire list this past year...I mean, come on? Look at what's happening in Mexico.

For that matter, look at what's happening here. Drug prohibition simply isn't practical; we have by far the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world and the drug war is only going worse and worse and wasting more money every day. Drugs certainly aren't becoming less available or more expensive, and the cost of pursuing enforcement of prohibition laws has become too high to make the whole endeavor practically feasible.
What's happening in Mexico is the result of the same corruption of culture and law that you are supporting here. In Mexico, there is no law. It is a criminal tyranny. It is a decadent culture.

But, we must also encourage morality while punishing drug traffickers and organized crime.

No one's busting the pimply asshats who get high watching Harold and Kumar in their efficiency apartment.

Actually, that happens all the time if they suspect these "asshats" of being weed dealers. People get shot to death by police in drugs busts over weed.

OK, fine. Here are hard statistics:

Bureau of Justice Statistics - Table on estimated number of arrests, by type of drug law violation

Looks to me as if arrests for possession of controlled substances outnumber arrests for sales/manufacture by more than 4 to 1. I had a glass of wine earlier, though. Maybe I can't read now.
