What I find objectionable is the whole cult and industry that has sprung up to capitalize on the fad. Fortunes will be made. Public money will be squandered. Followers will feel good. But nothing useful will result.

That always happens... but it doesn't make the original goal wrong, or the impending problem false.

The political agenda on both sides of the issue muddies the waters though. Makes it hard to know if research is being affected by certain agendas. For instance, if grants are only awarded for a certain line of investigation and there's a lot of pressure to adhere to a certain theory, how can we know if that theory is being adequately challenged?

Btw, I am not a Christian right winger, I am a liberal and I believe in protecting the enviroment.

There is a lot of money on the "anti-global warming" side, looking for anything to contest the theory. ExXon was caught funding anti-global warming groups, doing things like trying to discredit Al Gore. Also, there are skeptical scientists out there who challenge the theory, that's what scientists do.

Since we're talking climate and not weather, more than a year. I'm thinking decades. If they can't predict decades into the future, their models are simply wrong.

There are people on this forum, like ptgatsby, that want us to start deliberately manipulating the climate when we can't even tell whether we're going to have a cold or mild winter.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Let's say the anti-global warming lobbies are blessed with billions of dollars, thanks to the industry.
It took a very long time for their opponents to get heard, at least.

    A very long time indeed.

And even then, even if almost all the scientific community agrees that AGW is real, the fact that there are still a lot of people doubting here is a way to credit the efficiency of the Anti-global warming lobbies, how money can affect the information, how our society can spread mass lies if you have the funds to campaign for them.

(It would almost convince me that Chomsky could be correct, if the guy wasn't so paranoid)

    ---

But I'm confident that within the next decade, AGW will eventually be fully acknowledged. You can't go against reality. The industrial lobbies are only trying to delay the inevitable, even if in the meantime, they maximize their profits (As long as they can).

How will you measure accuracy? Particularly if the global warming alarmists are right, and waiting decades to see if they are accurate causes significant death and destruction.

By comparing their predictions to actual measurements. How else?
