Default What do you think of conspiracy theories?

I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on conspiracy theories. Does anyone believe in any in particular or do you think they are generally false and why? Is anyone a fan of them?

Conspiracy theories was on my mind, just yesterday! Especially one in particular. I'm NOT a fan of them. I'll elaborate on this when I have more time.

Depends what conspiracy theory it is. I believe, for one, that the progressive movement has been in effect since the 1900's and that this country is being bent to their socialist, fascist, and communist Utopian desires (three different isms used because different groups/individuals have different goals and directions).

Most conspiracy theories are based on the grand-daddy of conspiracy theories - anti-semitism.

I'm very interested in conspiracy theories, however, I don't take stock in every detail of each theory.
I'm pretty sure that's how one goes buhbyes in a big white van and snazzy jacket to match.

I love hearing about varying perspectives, and considering all kinds of outrageous possibilities. However, I am a skeptic. Consider sources. Consider validity of sources. Consider my own reasoning, & perception of validity. I question everything, and all I conclude regarding anything I see/hear/read about is that precious little certainty can be drawn from all the possibilities...

but.. they're certainly fun to tumble around in my head. :rolli:

I hate the label. It's used to shut down conversation and to shame people.

Label anything you want as "conspriacy theory" and people's minds shut off. Attach any nutty idea to a valid question and people throw the baby out with the bath water.

Study legitmate History. It's full of conspriacies. So it comes down to what's nutjob and what is plausible. The nutjob is easy to debunk, but only time and proper historical perspective can sort out the plausible for sure. We really can't know all the things the historians who investigate and study us will know.

What is most interesting is to compare conspiracy theories and see if they have a common structure and a common history.

Conspiracy theories have been around for many, many thousands of years, so it would be surprising if they didn't have a common structure.

But my bet is that they have a common emotional structure. In other words conspiracy theories appeal to us because they meet a common need.

And conspiracy theories spring eternal. So we will never be short of a good conspiracy theory.

However if it is a choice between a conspiracy and a stuff-up, go for the stuff-up.
