thoughtful people realize that both liberalism *and* conservatism have their places and their times.

but specific to specter, his research indicated that he couldn't get re-elected with the label "republican" next to his name. so, instead of trying to convince people of the worthiness of his positions he simply swapped labels. he says he plans to continue voting by his beliefs and not simply down his new party line. this is politics at its best (or worst).

Did you just refer to Arlen Specter as a "conservative?" :yim_rolling_on_the_

On a side note, Specter and I were in the same fraternity at Penn. I never heard any stories about him the way I did about Ed Rendell, but I did ride the elevator at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with Specter about 8 months ago, and he looks like death warmed over. It's sad to say, but his cancer will probably come raging back. I seriously doubt he lives through the the 2011-2017 Senate term.

I know, but this thread was looking seriously unbalanced towards the right before I posted.

I didn't really know of Specter before this, but I am glad he decided to switch. I don't want the democrats to have absolute power, but if we're going to get some of our progressive, socialist, left-wing agenda that will KILL AMERICA (according to conservatives), then we need all the support we can get.

    This is good news.
The Democrats have an opportunity to make real change.
It's up to them to take advantage of it.
Traditionally, the Democrats have been all talk and no action, willing to fight unsuccessfully for wimpy compromises.
It is put up or shut up time for the Democrats.
Let's see if the Democrats have backbone.

Specter has already made clear he intends to die in office, so he'll keep on trucking.

It was a strategically intelligent move. In the mean time, I'm surprised at how much the Republicans are sucking. It looks like it's going to take a long time before the figure out what they need to do.

I roll my eyes when people make statements like this. We'll only see "real change" if it comes from the people, not government.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Of course you do, because I said it.

meanwhile the idiots on the left are hailing the guy as some sort of new found ally, and those idiots don't seem to understand that the only reason people like him are in office are for their own agendas and for their own power and clout. REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS, YOU ARE BOTH F***ING CLOWNS! Do something redeemable, like making me a freaking giraffe balloon. Politics are filled with so many self serving unprincipled zealots like him that it should make EVERYONE with an ounce of character terminally ill. These parties are rife with this abominable corruption. Both sides look so retarded I won't even want to grace them with more disparaging words typed from my (comparatively) immaculate fingertips.
