everyone uses every function about evenly. take NE for example. if there are those who don't use it much, then why are there such massive amounts of people constantly flowing through Wallmart with 20 items or less?

She was briefed on it. (I fail to see how this has anything to do with the thread OP though, heh. )

Anyway, with any huge event, probability needs to be multiplied by effect. Pandemics are low probability but high effect events. They remeasure the risk by using certain earmarks and classifications, like they have here. This moves it to a higher probability, and can measure the effect (% survival rate).

So, I'd say this is a pretty moderate risk. These events are all or nothing kinds of events. First it has to into the wild and survive. If it does, you have a small buffer (medical support) that can absorb it. Once that buffer is gone, it cannot be controlled and it reaches the full 'exponential' growth.

Unlikely to happen, but still a moderate risk.

The article: MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A strain of flu never seen before has killed up to 60 people in Mexico and has also appeared in the United States, where eight people were infected but recovered, health officials said on Friday.

Mexico's government said at least 20 people have died of the disease in central Mexico and that it may also have been responsible for 40 other deaths.
The article contridicts itself. First it says the flu absolutely killed 60, then it says only 20 for sure with another 40 maybe.

Also 60 people dead, while tragic for them and their loved ones, is hardly "ravaging" a large city like Mexico. The drama wagon is coming out way before its time on this one.

I read that like 948 people total are believed to have the flu in Mexico City. Mexico City has a population of 8,836,045 inhabitants, that's a very low percentage. Keep it all in perspective.

This article even states they don't know if this really is new or if it's been around a while.

How many people does the flu kill each year that gets back page reporting?

I don't see where it contradicted itself... they said 'up to'.

The article explains why this is getting special attention. Out of season, new genetic line, dramatic local increase, etc. It's also not a dramatic article. It stated all of this without nearly no opinion and included the WHO and CDC disclaimer that there is no significant risk (ie: travel etc. remains safe.)
