Wow, 8 hours of school? That's crazy, I would demand that my kid got paid for it if it was to be made compulsory. But, fortunately, I live in Europe.

They do it in a lot of other places... it just somehow goes against North American culture...

From a long time student's point of view... the hours you put in is not a true indicator of your success in college.

Study smarter not harder. I don't understand why schools don't teach you how to self study effectively. Instead you have to pick it up on your own. I think some students who having difficulties in school with science and math do so because they try to rote memorize crap rather than understanding the principles...

    What a novel idea.

The United States is average when it comes spending per primary pupil in the world. We're actually slightly ahead of Finland, which is considered to have the best primary education in the world. The U.S. is 3rd in the world in spending per secondary student. We have the most expensive private universities in the world, though, and we have the best.

I went to a very expensive private high school, and they schedule about 6.7 hours of school per day, but we only had 160 days scheduled. The state mandated 1,000 hours of schooling per year for both public and private. I felt bad for the public kids, though. They had more non-class time scheduled, and they had to go over 180 days per year as a result.
