And the word "sacred" presumes some sort of religious affiliation, so I'm really gonna back out now.

But this has been fun, thanks!
You can have a concept of the sacred without religion. Do you believe love is sacred?

No you're not. get your ass back here.
everyone uses every function about evenly. take NE for example. if there are those who don't use it much, then why are there such massive amounts of people constantly flowing through Wallmart with 20 items or less?

The male should be able to take care of himself (or a really bad decision was made here), I'm pretty sure its a benefit to have a male helping out.

It is not easy taking care of children and working.

You are gone most of the time and can't always watch them, now you got to pay a sitter (and school is shorter than work hours).

You are tired, and thus in less than perfect mood.

Its a lot more stressful to the point of it being unhealthy.
    This is what I mean.

More and more, women don't choose to work when they have young children. Rather, they are forced to to maintain an economic status that they had before, and even take second jobs, just to make ends meet, even if there is the support of a husband and he is working, too.

The male may be increasing the income, but what about everything else? Is he helping?

You have just contradicted yourself within your own two statements.

A lot of this is because we do not value the family unit. It's a vicious cycle. If women (or men) dropped out of the rat race to focus on raising their children, wages would increase.

Should we mandate one stay-at-home parent per family with small children?

I have a feeling that, despite the equality and choice issues, what it would mostly affect is the economy. More pay per worker. And we can't have that and stay competitive, can we?

I'm not asking for equal numbers of women construction workers to men. I'm asking for under society's eye, not a biological point of view. I'm talking about getting rid of this whole 'spheres' business. Because while women have relatively successfully penetrated the man's traditional sphere of influence, men have been avoiding reciprocating.

    1. Change doesn't happen through government mandate. People must decide what is important to them. If enough people chose to give a shit, things could change.
    2. Sure we can. Think how much money would be saved from daycare, from divorce, from eating fast food and dining out, from health problems related to stress. Our societal disintegration incurs major costs.

I'm seriously out of this conversation, but am still interested in your viewpoint and I want to get some clarification: why should the family unit be valued? (and make no mistake, I don't devalue it - I'm just wondering what it means to you). what actual harm has come to society with the advent of unwed relationships - you mentioned selfishness - but what specifically?

    Ok, backing out again now...
