So I should get married to trap a man who wouldn't ordinarily want to be with me?

Or should I give a shit that it's better for the man to be married?

Not what I said and not what I mean. I don't stand for anything about marriage. But I do think that two (or three, or four) people can have a loving relationship without being married.

Marriage is official according to the government and whatever religious authorities. There are many marriages that don't give the sort of commitment and companionship commonly associated with them.

Noooo. As I said, it's not about the spouses as much as it is about the children and the family unit. All this talk about how it benefits men more than women belies the reality that ultimately a marriage should create a single family unit. Even looking at things from this individualistic perspective is counter to the very unitarian spirit of marriage, which is probably why people fail in their marriages in the first place.

    Beneficial for whom?

Exactly, and that's what makes me predictable.

Society! Which, in the end, is each one of us.

Right, but you also said the husband would start a new family - something about daughters - I don't feel like looking it up right now...

I just think that people should have whatever arrangement works for them and makes them happy. This is what would benefit society in my opinion. If marriage is what you feel you need, then more power to you.

People are bad judges of what actually makes them happy. This is why we have traditions in the first place. Choice can be a worse tyranny.

So who is a better judge of my happiness? You? Traditions are great if they are still useful and purposeful. My argument is that there is no specific reason to be married anymore. Forced institutions are also a tyranny.

I don't think children suffer from unwed parents. Children suffer from neglectful parents.

It seems to me I've read more than one study that shows marriage is more beneficial for men than for women. Since women can support themselves better than they ever could, and since the government will subsidize a single woman and her child only if there is no live-in male (Aid to Dependent Children), many women choose to have the baby and keep the man as ... sort of a consort.
