Fertility clinic doctor's design-a-kid offer creates uproar
Prospective parents will have to wait for "designer" babies.

A fertility doctor who offered to customize traits like eye and hair color is backing down and says he will mess with Mother Nature only for medical reasons - for now.

"We're going to limit it to people with genetic diseases because we just cannot keep up with what's going on," Dr. Jeff Steinberg said Tuesday.

He said a Daily News story about his plan to help parents predetermine physical traits triggered a flood of calls.

At the moment, he can't accommodate parents who want a certain eye and hair color for cosmetic reasons, he said. He'll focus instead on families with histories of albinism, color blindness and several other genetic disorders.

Steinberg, who has offices in Manhattan and Los Angeles, said he's accepting requests from nonmedical cases "but we're not doing it right now."

His institute also yanked a Web site announcement on the controversial service: "PREDICTIVE GENOMICS TO BE AVAILABLE: Eye color, hair color, cancer tendency and more."

Many New York moms and dads recoiled Tuesday at the idea physicians could cherry-pick embryos in a lab to produce children who have, say, blue eyes or blond hair.

"That's ridiculous. People are too concerned with having the perfect baby," said Katie Staggers, 32, of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, who has a 7-month-old son, Will.

"I don't know why a person who has any sense would do that."

A mother who underwent the procedure at the NYU Fertility Center to determine the gender of her third child defended it Tuesday.

"When you have two of the same [gender], it's awesome and amazing - but when you have one of the other, too, it's just different," said the mom, who asked to be anonymous. "And my other children are just so enjoying the new baby, and the fact that the baby is different."

It's almost amazing what they can do now a days, this is loaded with potential both good and bad.

    Again, you thoughts?

I am always positive about new medical breakthroughs that can improve lives. However, I think that there will be some unforeseen consequences that will upset stupid parents' plans majorly. It's fortunate that in Western society the vast majority of people don't always favor one gender for children, as well. This technology could be disastrous in the short- to medium-term in a place like China, for instance.

I don't even see the appeal of designing their looks, is eye colour really that important?

    Of course not.

I suspect much of the psychology brought to the surface through widespread use of this medical technology will deal with people wanting to create children in the perfect image, as they themselves see perfection. It would give strength to all the shallow and superficial crap we suffer from in this country. Genetically engineering our children is to play a GREAT creative role, and considering I have NO faith in humanity whatsoever, I do believe they will make all the wrong decisions with this creative power.

With that said, I would have to give my son a big big ****. That's all he needs to get ahead in life .

Part of the beauty of humanity is our imperfection, I believe flawlessness is inhuman.

I think we've all seen what this could lead to in the movies.

I'm all for eliminating genetic illnesses with this technology though.

Well, it looks like someone wanted publicity. And someone got it, too.

Btw, re: the hair and eye colour thing - whenever I read about this stuff I always wonder about the fact that hair and eye colour don't make you beautiful. You could get your blonde haired blue eyed baby with buckteeth and a potato head. They need to start being able to select for facial ratios and other weird, specific stuff like that.

200 years from now, humans will be grown, there's no doubt (assuming some big ole war, or something, doesn't hinder scientific progress). Why risk having an imperfect baby when science can help?

It's kinda of a disturbing thought but all things change. And people's perception does too.

First of all, Nazis aren't interested in eye color specifically - they are interested in eye color only as a part of the general anthropological racial type, which does not only include blue eyes. As an example, many semitic groups also have blue and green eyes. Just to clarify.

So I think the National Socialist argument is totally crazy.

That being said, there is a real problem with this technology. It's unnatural. Diseases and genetic differences are there for a reason.

I also really LOVE the idea of a private company controlling the growth of future generations. Lovely.
