And frankly, within this country, there really isn't much difference between the two. If you are libertarian you just get to pretend that one day the corporate masters will let you get rich enough to be one of them and if you are socialist you just get to pretend you could become a bureaucratic master yourself without having to sell your soul to the corporate masters who finance your campaign.

Mandatory voluntary service...slavery...wage work...it's all the same. It all depends upon which illusion you accept as your worldview.
We can take it a step further and say that even in the absence of businesses and bureaucracies we're slaves to the illusion that is our need to survive.

The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of this particular expression according to a specified ritual, in a given physical state, and in the absence of any sort of allied mental imagery, at the beginning and at the end of each day.

    Anyway...

Babylon Candle, are you aware that you look more and more like a preacher?

I would no say that Capitalism has "failed" (and furthermore, what you call Socialism is in fact a light version of Social-liberalism also based on a capitalistic structure, although not a libertarian capitalism. You know, Keynes wasn't marxist!). I would rather say that Capitalism has lost its common sense.

Just like you, and many others here.

Negating the real world will lead you to nowhere, nor yelling your despair in large print. Your display of faith is now just inadequate.

We're in 2009, the Reagan era is far, far away. It's time to adapt to a new economical paradigm, and to be pragmatic rather than dogmatic.

Perhaps you can "preach" that to aquaintences which you meet that should be at their regular job while you both perform service to your community.
everyone uses every function about evenly. take NE for example. if there are those who don't use it much, then why are there such massive amounts of people constantly flowing through Wallmart with 20 items or less?

I'm not preaching anything, you troll.

I just see a global failure, and the need to change if we don't want that the same causes induce the same consequences.
But since I'm not selling any kind of ideology, I won't "preach" for a specific solution. Anything that could work, we should try.

You know, I'm not socialist. I just used the word to scare our conservative brethren, and see their reaction. It seems they're so lost and confused they didn't even noticed it was humor.

That tells a lot. Fanatical zealots are known to lack any sense of humor.

Exactly. Why should they control (i.e. screw up) everything?

Well, this could add some variety, or maybe spice things up, so please do.

Mandating community service goes far beyond social-liberalism and into the realm of hard-core social-democracy (at best). Rather than simply demanding a very high proportion of the profits from their chosen means of production in a (mostly misguided) effort to ensure that all people have the means of exercising and protecting their rights (mostly of a "positive" nature in this context), mandatory community service deprives people of their actual physical liberty in order to satisfy some vague majoritarian community spirit.

As for the rest, you know what Keynes himself said about practical-minded men...

Well, I could answer you with another quote from the same man:
